Are you an experienced shelter professional interested in gaining skills to share your expertise with other shelters via professional consultation? Have you wanted to understand the best approach to an unbiased assessment of your own organization? Are you a veterinary specialist in training, looking for experiences to meet your credentialing requirements?

The Shelter Consultation Mentorship Program covers foundational and advanced learning in the shelter consultation process for veterinarians and shelter leaders seeking to expand their professional skills in shelter consultation.

The Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge offers working professionals two levels of training in shelter consultation. It begins with a Foundational Course of online self-study and assigned readings. The Foundational Course is available to anyone free online. Trainees who complete the Foundational Course are eligible to apply for one of the limited number of positions in the Advanced Course, in which they will join a team of experts and participate in a comprehensive assessment for a shelter client.

The mentorship program is frequently attended by shelter medicine interns, residents, shelter managers, veterinarians, veterinary students, and animal welfare professionals from national organizations. The Advanced Course provides an opportunity for ABVP Shelter Medicine Specialty candidates to meet some of their credentialing requirements. This course is also valuable for shelter professionals who would like to assess their own shelter management processes and programs.

Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge is creating transformative “communities of practice” that deliver access to care through humane, community-centric programming—inside and outside of the shelter—to achieve the right outcome for every pet. Our consultative mentoring services are holistic, deep and practical, and delivered by the proven team who brought you the Million Cat Challenge, in expanded partnership with Open Door Veterinary Collective. This program is made available at no cost to participants, #ThanksToMaddie
